Our Affiliations

First and foremost at Calvary we are Christians, meaning our primary allegiance is to Jesus Christ as Lord.  If you can agree to that (or at least you are open to learning more about Jesus) you will find a spiritual home at Calvary. You don’t have to share any of the following affiliations, in addition, to be a member of Calvary.

Humility should be a distinguishing mark of individual Christians and churches; none of us know it all. Just as the believer needs brothers and sisters in Christ, so the “Parish Church” needs the wider body of Christ - locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Local

Calvary is just one part of the body of Christ in Golden. We enjoy an active partnership with many other Golden churches.

The Together Church in Golden aims to worship, pray, serve, and witness for the Glory of God! We realize that together we can do so much more than alone. We share in youth ministry, governmental service, personal needs based ministries, community programs, and weekly prayer as leaders. It is our desire to continue to deepen this relationship and celebrate the wonderful diversity of the Christ-centered churches in our community.

Regional

Calvary is one Parish Church within the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado.  The term “episcopal” refers to the role of the Bishop as spiritual leader of the diocese (in our case, the boundaries of our diocese correspond directly to Colorado State boundaries). Rob O’Neil is the current Bishop of Colorado.

Calvary partners, most regularly, with those in the diocese who are able to affirm the following:

  1. Commitment to living our lives under the authority of Jesus Christ and a faithful reading of Holy Scripture.

  2. Commitment to the historic faith, order, and practice of the Episcopal Church as held in communion with other Provinces of the Anglican Communion.

  3. Commitment to the traditional Christian theology of the Sacrament of Marriage, the Uniqueness of Christ, and the doctrine of the Trinity.

National

Denominationally, Calvary belongs to The Episcopal Church (USA), the national branch (or Province) of the worldwide Anglican Communion. In recent years, the Episcopal Church has placed itself at odds with the wider Communion and global Christianity in general. This estrangement has come about through a series of decisions and actions that appear to question biblical authority, deny the uniqueness of Christ and innovate with Christian standards for human sexuality.  Calvary maintains a normative (what others might call ‘orthodox’) position in the face of these revisions to our faith; committed to the Episcopal Church but clear on the limits.

International

The Anglican Communion is a world-wide affiliation of Anglican Churches. There is no single "Anglican Church" with universal juridical authority, since each national or regional church has full autonomy. As the name suggests, the Anglican Communion is an association of these churches in full communion with the Church of England (which may be regarded as the "mother church" of the worldwide communion), and specifically with its primate, the Archbishop of Canterbury. With over seventy seven million members, the Anglican Communion is the third largest communion in the world, after the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches.

Calvary has a special link with the Diocese of Southern Malawi (south-east Africa), where our Rector, John Wengrovius, served as a missionary seminary professor in the 1980’s.

The Bishop of Southern Malawi, James Tengatenga, has visited Calvary several times and in the last few years we have made numerous mission trips there.  Calvary’s Mission to Malawi focuses on Education with the current goal to build and stock libraries at every church-sponsored Primary school in the region.
