Becoming a Christian
Being a Christian is about having a
relationship with the living God!
But how is that possible?
It
begins with God. He draws us into a
relationship that blesses him as much as
it does us
-
"No
one can come to me unless the Father
who sent me draws him..."
John 6:44
-
"Here I am! I stand at the door and
knock. If anyone hears my voice and
opens the door, I will come in..."
Revelation 3:20
-
He created us to live in
relationship with Him: "So God
created human beings in his own
image, in the image of God he
created them; male and female he
created them."
Genesis 1:27
Admit
your need for God
-
We have all rebelled against God:
"We all, like sheep, have gone
astray, each of us has turned to our
own way." Isaiah 53:6
-
The
Bible calls this attitude sin.
"...for all have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God."
Romans 3:23
Believe
that Jesus is the way to salvation
-
Jesus said: "...I am the way and
the truth and the life. No one comes
to the Father except through me."
John 14:6
-
Jesus' death on the cross is God's
rescue plan for us: "But God
demonstrates his own love for us in
this: While we were still sinners,
Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8
-
We
do not earn salvation; it is God's
free gift: "For it is by grace
you have been saved, through faith -
and this not from yourselves, it is
the gift of God - not by works, so
that no one can boast."
Ephesians 1:8-9
Count
the Cost of becoming a disciple
-
Being a Christian means following
Jesus' example: "Whoever wants to
be my disciple must deny themselves
and take up their cross daily and
follow me." Luke 9:23
-
Following Jesus will mean a change
in lifestyle: "You were taught,
with regard to your former way of
life, to put off your old self,
which is being corrupted by its
deceitful desires."
Ephesians 4:22
Decide
to follow Jesus
-
Make the most
important decision of your life:
"...for, 'Everyone who calls on the
name of the Lord will be saved."
Romans 10:13
-
Allow Jesus to
be the King he truly is: "If you
confess with your lips that 'Jesus
is Lord', and believe in your heart
that God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved"
Romans 10:9
-
Pray a simple
prayer like this:
"Lord Jesus
Christ, I am sorry for the things I
have done wrong in my life. Please
forgive me. I now turn from
everything which I know is wrong.
Thank you that you died on the cross
for me so that I could be forgiven
and set free. Thank you that you
offer me forgiveness and the gift of
your Holy Spirit. I now receive that
gift. Please come into my life by
your Holy Spirit to be with me for
ever. Thank you, Lord Jesus. Amen."
From "Why
Jesus" by Nicky Gumbel
Experience
the fullness of new life in Christ
-
The Holy Spirit now lives in you.
Believe it!
"And if the Spirit of him who raised
Jesus from the dead is living in
you, he who raised Christ from the
dead will also give life to your
mortal bodies through his Spirit,
who lives in you."
Romans 8:11
-
The Spirit will transform you for
the better: "...the fruit of the
Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and
self-control."
Galatians 5:22-23
